Meet the Millers in Motion

December 18, 2023 — by Ryan Miller

Howdy! We are Ryan and Lauren Miller, a husband and wife team from Texas trying to balance our wanderlust and roots. We built a life we loved but were inspired to travel and experience more. We purchased our first RV in 2022 and started to document our journey. We hope to inspire and educate you in your personal journey, too. We immediately recognized how amazing and unique the RV community was, and we are excited to be a part of that positive environment and to help it develop. We look forward to sharing our adventures with you! Now, Let’s talk road conditions.

WHY DOES A BETTER SUSPENSION MATTER?

Which is easier to do… Fix all the roads in America so they’re free of potholes, heaves, and junctions, or prepare your vehicle to navigate them better? This was the discussion we had on our first long drive day of nearly 12 hours over three states. Maybe comfort while driving isn’t an issue for you, but also think about the wear and tear on your vehicle(s). When subjected to continued stress, parts will fail over time. Maybe that means broken leaf springs, U-bolts or hangars fracturing, or tire blow-outs, but maybe it means major frame stress or damage to structures or items in your RV. It could be an inconvenience if it’s minor and you’re prepared, or it could be a bigger issue that threatens to derail your entire trip.

Ok, so what are my options?

CRE3000

An easy, cost-effective bolt-on system that uses a rubber cushion and allows three inches of travel to help absorb shock. We had this on our first RV, and it is a noticeable improvement from the stock and standard system.

ALLTREK 4000

This is an upgrade from the CRE3000 providing 40% more rubber cushion and four inches of travel for an even better ride. It’s still easy to install with a bolt-on mechanism and relatively cost-effective for the protection you get.

INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION (I.S.)

This is the very best of the best! IS allows each tire to individually adjust to the road, without consequently shifting stress onto an axle or another tire. This is by far the smoothest towing experience available, which also means the least amount of shock gets transferred to your RV frame, contents, and tow vehicle. No more axles or leaf springs. Instead, you get rubber shear springs and over five inches of travel per tire. IS through MORryde is confidently backed by a five-year warranty. We wanted the best for our new Alliance Valor 44v14, and we wanted to be prepared for any adventure that may arise (we’re talking about you, Alaska!), so this was definitely the best option for us, and we couldn’t be happier.

Our upgrade process also included going from standard drum brakes to disc brakes, and we strongly recommend this. Drum brakes are more prone to fading or heat-related failure, they retain more water which can lead to corrosion, and they require more maintenance. Disc brakes are the most powerful and efficient braking option, and they require less maintenance. Performance-wise, stopping distance is also significantly reduced by disc brakes, up to about 33%. While the exact difference changes based on speed, cargo weight, and other factors, our opinion is that every little bit counts in the name of safety.

Cheers,

Lauren and Ryan Miller
